At Sandarviken 223 bird species have been recorded. 35 species of wading birds have been recorded.
Sandarviken holds thousands of wintering Чернь морська but Турпан, Синьга, Пухівка зеленошия and diving ducks also winter in smaller numbers. Other waterfowl like Свищ євразійський, Широконіска північна Чирянка мала, Галагаз євразійський and Нерозень also winter in the area. Sandarviken holds wintering Пірникоза велика, Пірникоза сірощока, and Пірникоза червоношия.Казарка білощока also winter as do a few wading birds in winter. Баранець малий is sometimes found. Wintering birds of prey are often found in the area. Some of the common ones are Лунь польовий, Канюк звичайний, Орлан-білохвіст, and Беркут.
During migration period the bay often holds large amounts of waders. Most numerous is the Побережник чорногрудий which sometimes number in the thousands. Грицик великий, Баранець звичайний, Кулик-сорока, Кульон великий, Коловодник звичайний, Побережник чорногрудий, Чоботар синьоногий, and Пісочник великий all breed somewhat regularly. Other wading birds often found are:Крем’яшник звичайний, Сивка морська, Грицик малий, Побережник білий, Побережник білохвостий, and Побережник малий. Rarer wading birds like Побережник болотяний, Плавунець круглодзьобий, Баранець малий and Баранець великий are sometimes found. Many vagrant wading birds have also been found.
In the lagoon Нерозень, Широконіска північна, Чирянка велика and many other dabbling ducks often Feed. Гагара червоношия and Гагара чорношия often rest at Sandarviken year round. Large amounts of geese use the coastal meadows as resting and feeding ground during their migration. Казарка білощока and Гуска сіра can sometimes be found in the thousands. Гуменник короткодзьобий and Казарка червоновола has been seen.
