Los Barruecos is a natural monument of two lakes surrounded by very special rock formations in Malpartida de Cáceres.
Monumento Natural Los Barruecos features granitic formations with artificial ponds. This landscape was transformed by the construction of a Wool Washer Factory that needed a lot of water for its activity. This is why the ‘Barrueco de Abajo’ reservoir and the ‘Barrueco de Arriba’ reservoir were created. The water reservoirs host a large list of aquatic birds. Spring is the best time when everything in the area is green with lots of flowers. Лелека білий breed on the rock formations. Other birds that can be observed in the area are Посмітюха, Посмітюха короткопала, Одуд, Бджолоїдка звичайна, сорокопуд південний, Косар білий, Пірникоза мала, Мала біла чапля, Набережник палеарктичний, Пісочник малий, Сорока іберійська, Кропив’янка середземноморська and Ходулoчник.

If you come from the main road E-803, which runs past the beautiful town of Cáceres, take the exit towards Malpertida de Cáceres, the N-521. At the first roundabout at Malpertida de Cáceres, turn left, take the 3rd exit on the roundabout, then at the next roundabout, turn right, the first exit, continue your way through the industrial area. After the industrial area, take the first road on the left until you reach the information sign Los Barrecuecos. Take the route to the lakes or go first to the Visitor Center. Click on a P in the map for directions to a parking. The circular walking route indicated on the map is about 4 km.
Please remember to reduce your speed on the N-521 road as there are birds flying everywhere over the road. Dogs are allowed provided they are on a leash (which the Spaniards do not do en masse.) Be aware the cows often come here to drink , even in summer when the lake is smaller because of dryness. If you are very lucky you could see the 2 Mongoose I saw there. See the picture I uploaded.
