Description
Estany de Sils is a freshwater lake surrounded by marshes. It was the largest natural lake in Catalonia before being drained in the nineteenth century. Restoration of the current permanent lagoon and floodplains began in 1998. This has made Estany de Sils again an important wetland in inland Catalonia. It contains a wide variety of habitats such as reed beds, floodplains and riparian forests. The diversity of aquatic habitats favors the presence of a rich and varied fauna. Many water birds inhabit the wetland. Also many migrant birds make a stop at Estany de Sils.
