Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Мартин скельний, Клуша and Мартин звичайний. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Кульон середній, Крем’яшник звичайний, Побережник білий and Набережник палеарктичний.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Крячок річковий and Крячок рожевий, but sometimes also Крячок рябодзьобий.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Буревісник cередземноморський can be observed. Small numbers of Бульверія тонкодзьоба can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Буревісник малий and Barolo Shearwater.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Мартин делаверський, Мартин гренландський and, in 2011, a Квак чорногорлий.
