Description
Albufeira de Santa Maria de Aguiar is housed in a valley with gentle slopes, where the Aguiar river flows. This reservoir is one of the most important wetlands in the district of Guarda. The scarcity of other wetlands nearby makes this area an important refuge for water birds, especially for Пірникоза велика, with this reservoir having one of the most important population centers nationally. Of the water birds also stand out species like Широконіска північна, Крижень, Шилохвіст, Нерозень, Чирянка мала, Попелюх звичайний, Пірникоза мала, Лиска звичайна, Водяна курочка, Ходулoчник, Чоботар синьоногий, Чапля руда, Коровайка бура and Косар білий. On the banks of the reservoir and the streams that flow into it, the aquatic and riparian vegetation is occupied by Баранець звичайний, Погонич звичайний, Бугайчик, Чапля сіра, Соловейко західний, Очеретянка середземноморська, Кобилочка-цвіркун, Очеретянка велика, Очеретянка ставкова,Очеретянка лучна and Рибалочка блакитний.
As regards the surrounding area, the vegetation is dominated by farmland, pastures and small forest areas that allow the presence of landbirds. In the bushes and trees of the east bank it is possible to hear and, with luck, observe species such as Зелений дятел, Дятел звичайний, Дятел малий, Сойка звичайна, Вивільга звичайна, Кеклик червононогий, Перепілка звичайна, Кропив'янка червоновола. You can also observe species like Одуд, Бджолоїдка звичайна, Чайка чубата, Сорокопуд червоноголовий, сорокопуд південний, Сорока звичайна, Сорока іберійська and Посмітюха короткопала on the banks of this reservoir. You should also prospect the skies, which are often crossed by large birds of prey, such as Скопа, Шуліка чорноплечий, Стерв’ятник білий, Осоїд євразійський, Black Vulture, Сип білоголовий, Змієїд блакитноногий, Орел-карлик малий, Беркут, Лунь очеретяний, Лунь лучний, Яструб малий, Яструб великий, Шуліка рудий, Шуліка чорний, Сапсан, Підсоколик великий, Боривітер звичайний. In the skies you can also see several species of swallows: Ластівка сільська, Даурська ластівка, Ластівка скельна, Ластівка міська, Ластівка берегова; and swifts: Серпокрилець чорний, Серпокрилець білочеревий, Серпокрилець блідий.
