The Elster Buitenwaarden is a varied river nature reserve. In winter there are many Гуска білолоба and Казарка білощока, and on the water Крех великий and Гоголь зеленоголовий. In spring Чоботар синьоногий, Галагаз євразійський and Пісочник малий breed on the mudflats. During spring migration, the area is rich in wading birds such as Коловодник болотяний, Коловодник великий, Коловодник чорний, and also sandpipers such as Побережник білохвостий, Побережник малий and Побережник червоногрудий are possible. Очеретянка чагарникова, Очеретянка ставкова, Кропив’янка сіра and Соловейко західний are common songbirds. Thanks to the great variety of habitats and tranquility, this is a top area for birds and birders.

Access
The Elster Buitenwaarden is located along the river Nederrijn near the town of Elst. Parking is available at Plantage Willem III, at Rijksstraatweg 265, Elst. Press P on the map for directions. From there, a marked walking route of approximately 6 km starts through the area, along marshes, mudflats and stream channels. Count on 1.5 to 2 hours for a visit.
