The reed beds in Fondo Toce Nature Reserve are one of the last remaining on the western shore of Lago Maggiore.
The Fondo Toce Nature Reserve, established in 1990, includes the last part of the River Toce as it enters Lake Maggiore, and part of the lake shore. This wetland of about 30 hectares has reed beds, willow thickets and open water. The area is important for the reproduction of fishes and for migratory and breeding birds. More than 130 bird species have been recorded in the area. Among the birds you can encounter are Пірникоза велика, Баклан великий, Рибалочка блакитний, Лебідь-шипун, Чирянка велика, Чернь червонодзьоба, Пірникоза мала, Пастушок, Очеретянка ставкова and Очеретянка велика. Крех великий can be observed here almost year round. In late summer you can see spectacular flocks of swallows in the reed beds.

By car: from the A26 exit for Verbania, continue to Fondotoce, where you turn right to reach the lake shore. Click on the P in the map for directions. By train: the nearest station is Verbania-Pallanza.
