Bakkatjörn pond is worth visiting if you are in Reykjavik. Somewhat similar of Lake Tjörnin in the heart of Reykjavik, but Bakkatjörn is a wilder site.
Bakkatjörn pond is a pond near Grótta in Seltjarnarnes, where many bird species reside for example: Галагаз євразійський, Кулик-сорока, Гагара червоношия, Грицик великий, Крячок полярний, Пухівка зеленошия, Лебідь-кликун and Щеврик лучний.
A bird watching hide by the pond allows bird watchers the opportunity to study and photograph the rich bird life of Bakkatjörn pond. The site is one of the most important nesting grounds of Крячок полярний in the capital region. The hide is designed to blend into the landscape, allowing bird watchers an opportunity to observe the birds without disturbing them.
Bakkatjörn is located within a walking distance (5 km) from the centre of Reykjavik. You should go through Seltjarnarnes town heading to western end of a peninsula. You can park your car at the parking lot on Suðurströnd street. Click on the P in the map for directions.
You can combine visiting this spot with a stay in Reykjavik (which gives you birding opportunities of spending time at Lake Tjörnin or cruising the bay - both spots are already described separately). Please note that the seashore and beaches are also worth exploring on foot in the nearby areas.
