Description
The Grüne Insel is a former island in the estuary of the river Eider. Today it is not influenced by the water levels of the estuary anymore and is instead shaped by the groundwater levels that change during the seasons. The wet meadows provide a home for species that have become rare in the rest of the landscape like Чайка чубата or Коловодник звичайний.
The shallow ponds are great to have a look in migration season when all kinds of waders can be seen there like Побережник червоногрудий, Побережник білохвостий, Брижач or Коловодник чорний. Note that the occurance of these species is dependent on the water levels. Because the observation distances can be quite high it is almost necessary to have spotting scope.
In the ditches next to the road you also have a good chance to see a hear reed breeding species like Очеретянка лучна, Вівсянка очеретяна and Синьошийка in spring and summer.
Late autumn is the best time to watch geese. With a bit of luck you can spot rarer species like Гуменник короткодзьобий or Казарка червоновола under the Казарка білощока and Гуска сіра.
