Big raised moor area of 4,747 hectares north of the village of Esterwegen.
Esterweger Dose is the largest raised moor area in the German state of Lower Saxony. The area is divided into core and buffer zones. The core areas are not accessible. Birds that breed in the area are Чайка чубата, Коловодник звичайний, Грицик великий, Кульон великий, Трав'янка чорноголова, Трав’янка лучна, Дрімлюга звичайний, Щеврик лучний and Чирянка мала. Also a chance to observe birds like Підсоколик великий, Лунь очеретяний, Гуска білолоба, Сорокопуд терновий and Журавель сірий.
There is no circular hiking trail, only a few paths into the moor. Since peat is mined in the entire core area, access is prohibited there. On the south side of the area is an educational trail (Moor Info Pfad, click on the P in the map to go there) and there is a viewpoint from a hill (see the map). The rest of the area can only be explored from the edges.
Until about 2015, the Esterweger Dose was the last breeding area of Сивка звичайна in Central Europe. Despite an ambitious rescue program, the bird could not be preserved for the area.
