Island in Helsinki with dense forest landscape, ponds, coastal meadows and beaches.
Seurasaari Island provides a nice setting for easy birding in the city of Helsinki. The island has diverse habitats, including natural coastal forests, herb-rich forests with valuable flora, ponds, smooth rocks and a coastal meadow. The area’s flora is very diverse in places, particularly in the south-east part of the island. The peaceful recreational area with its old trees is attractive to many birds.
Seurasaari’s shores and islets are also used as nesting grounds by a variety of birds. But note that the island’s southern shore and islet are a conservation area. Between 1 April and 15 August, visitors are prohibited from coming ashore or moving within 25 metres of the islet.
Seurasaari Island is located west of the centre of Helsinki. The journey from Helsinki city centre takes around 20 minutes by bus. Bus 24 from the city centre operates to Seurasaari. Tram number 4 stops at Paciuksenkaari, from where it's about a 10 minutes walk to Seurasaari. There is a small parking lot (4h) next to the Seurasaari bridge. There is a free parking area next to the Meilahti sports field (about 1.5 km from Seurasaari). The island is open every day with free entry. There are many trails to explore the island. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 3,5 km.
Seurasaari Island is known mostly as the location of the Seurasaari Open-Air Museum, which consists of old, mainly wooden buildings transplanted from elsewhere in Finland and placed in the dense forest landscape of the island.
