Description
Voroklini Lake (also called Oroklini Lake) is a protected Natura 2000 site of Paneuropean significance thanks to the biodiversity of the lake. Voroklini Lake is one of only seven natural wetlands in Cyprus. Despite its small size, it has a rich birdlife. The site is located about 9 km from the city of Larnaka town and south of the village of Voroklini. Several threatened bird species come to nest at the site: Ходулoчник, Чайка шпорова, Лежень, Крячок малий, Крячок річковий and Пісочник морський. During migration (in spring or autumn) or in winter many migratory birds and many species of ducks can be seen. A total of around 200 species have been recorded at the site. Voroklini Lake is also the only site in Cyprus where Чернь червонодзьоба nests. Other birds you can see in the wetland are Фламінго, Чапля єгипетська, Чирянка мала, Широконіска північна, Шилохвіст, Чернь білоока, Чирянка велика, Пірникоза мала, Брижач, Баранець звичайний, Коловодник ставковий, Коровайка бура and Лунь очеретяний. On the fields around the lake keep you eyes open for Турач туркменський, Горлиця мала, Кеклик кремовогорлий, Лежень, Кам’янка кіпрська and Посмітюха.

From the observation platform at the information kiosk, north of the wetland, visitors have a full view of the wetland's north part, which is also the smallest. From the birdwatching hide south of the wetland visitors can see the largest part of Voroklini Lake which has higher salinity levels than the north part. Here one can see the nesting islets created for Чайка шпорова. Winter and Spring are the best times for such a visit.
