The moist low-lying grasslands of nature reserve De Assels along the Leie are a resting area in winter for Кульон великий, Казарка білощока, Свищ євразійський and Нерозень. As a breeding area it is interesting for Вівсянка очеретяна, Очеретянка ставкова, Очеретянка лучна and Пірникоза мала. Failed breeding attempts of Грицик великий in 2023 and 2024.

De Assels is located west of Ghent. Drongen station is within walking distance. Perfectly accessible by bike (bike route from Ghent Sint-Pieters station to Drongen. Parking at Drongen station. On foot a walk of 6 km, count on at least 2 hours. A round trip is possible by bike
