Description
The Ballewijer nature reserve is enclosed in the urban areas of Zonhoven and Molenheide. The area consists of two ponds. The ponds with their reed beds are of great value for waterfowl, amphibians and dragonflies. The edge of the marsh and ponds is a biotope that mainly attracts Синьошийка and Пастушок. The marsh contains both Слуква лісова and Баранець звичайний. The small reed beds are home to breeding birds like Очеретянка ставкова and Вівсянка очеретяна. Other birds that you can see are Скопа, Бугайчик, Пірникоза велика, Пірникоза мала, Чирянка велика, Нерозень, Чернь чубата, Попелюх звичайний and Широконіска північна and also waders during bird migration.

De vijvers zijn met hun rietkragen van grote waarde voor watervogels, amfibieën en libellen. De rand van het moeras en de vijvers is een biotoop dat vooral Синьошийка en Пастушок aantrekt.
