This former cattle ranch in Hwange National Park is located on a 55 m high outcrop and overlooking the wide surroundings.
With a checklist of 500 species, Hwange National Park is a fantastic place for birding. Fifty types of raptor have been recorded, with impressive birds like the Martial Eagle or the striking Bateleur. Grassland heavyweights include Common Ostrich, Kori Bustard, Secretarybird, Southern Ground-Hornbill and flocks of Grey Crowned Crane. Hwange is a stronghold for many species unique to the dry Kalahari region, including Bradfield's Hornbill, Southern Pied-Babbler and Crimson-breasted Gonolek.
Sinamatella Camp is located near the northern boundary of Hwange National Park on an outcrop, 55 m high, overlooking a distant riverbed and grassy plain. The name Sinamatella is a distortion of the name of a local shrub called ‘chinamatira’. Sinamatella is a great base for game-drives, but it is also a joy to stay at the camp itself. Having breakfast at the restaurant and looking over the plains below you with big game strolling by and birds everywhere is an experience in itself. Also the nights are exciting when elephants, hyenas and honey badgers roam over the campsite and sometimes are very close.
Sinamatella Camp is approximately 120 km from Main Camp. Vehicles are not allowed to travel between the camps after 1400hrs. Sinamatella is an intensive protection zone (IPZ). The camp offers accommodation in lodges, cottages, chalets or you can pitch a tent on the campsite.
Note: we stayed in Sinamatella Camp several years ago and we share it here because we absolutely loved the place. But there seems to be new management now. So if anyone has stayed recently, please leave a comment and tell us if it still is such a great place.
