Description

Ideford Common comprises of 2% of Devon's lowland heath, just South of the A380 Exeter to Newton Abbot main road. The common is on the Southern edge of Haldon Hill (Haldon Forest SSSI - see separate entry) and is included as part of that sites SSSI. The area comprises of typical heathland species. In September a spectacular display of Heather (Calluna) is in flower, the site also has Silver Birch (Betula) and Willow (Salix) and is partly surrounded by both coniferous and deciduous woodland. Among bird species depending on season you can expect Çobanaldatan, Çayır incirkuşu and Funda Ötleğeni. In a corner of the wooded car park is a bird feeding station, be sure to check this area as Küçük Huş İsketesi, Karabaşlı iskete and a small number of Kayın Baştankarası and Dağ ispinozu can often be seen in this area alongside commoner passerines.

The reserve has numerous paths composed of flint stones, some of which are public bridleways, horse riders and cyclists can be expected. During breeding season DO NOT stray from worn pathways. The best time to see and hear Çobanaldatan is after dusk, due to reserve being completely unlit a torch/headtorch is recommended.

Non Avian species include Adder (Vipera berus), Common Lizard (Zootoca vivipera), Slow Worm (Anguis fragilis), Green Tiger Beetle (Cicindela campestris), Glow Worm (Lampyris Noctiluca) and amongst many Lepidoptera, Small Blue (Cupido minimus) and Common Blue (Polyommatus icarus).
