Best seawatch point on Islay, near 5 offshore islands where an 18th century French ship sank.
Frenchman's Rocks is a useful seawatch point in late summer and early autumn, best when a SW or NW wind is blowing. Best views are from the hill next to Wavegen Power Station, called Rubha na Faing on the Ordnance Survey map. There is a car park at Claddach near Currie Sands beach.
Birds to see are Karabaş patka, Kara ördek, Buz Dalgýcý, Karagerdanlý dalgýç, Kýzýlgerdanlý dalgýç, kül rengi yelkovan, Atlantik Yelkovanı, Balear Yelkovanı, çatal kuyruklu fırtına kirlangici, Büyük Korsanmartı, Kütkuyruklu korsanmartı, Korsanmartı, Kutup sumrusu, çatal kuyruklu martı, Karaayaklı martı, Kıyı çamurçulluğu, kaya incirkuşu, Tasçeviren and Mor Kumkuşu.
Ferry to Islay from Kinnacraig (delays possible) or by air from Glasgow. The site is at the far end of Rhinns of Islay peninsula. Click on the P in the map to get directions.
