Large reservoir south of Bristol. Dry summers leave exposed mud in autumn, attracting flocks of waders. Popular with winter wildfowl.
There are numerous car parks around Blagdon Reservoir, and two bird hides. An 8 km circular walk around the lake is possible. See map on the link below.
The chief interest is the easternmost hide looking over the autumn mudflats. Expect Karakarınlı kumkuşu, Çamurçulluğu, Ak kumkuşu, Kızılbacak, Yeşilbacak and plovers. The swampy wooded area by the hide may have Çulluk and Su çulluğu. Wintering ducks may include Altıngöz, Fiyu, Kaşıkgaga, perhaps Telkuyruk or kalın gagalı batağan. In stormy winter weather, proximity to the Bristol channel makes this a refuge for windblown seabirds. 177 species have been seen, including rarities such as Deniz düdükçünü, uzun kanatlı kumkuşu, Sarıbacaklı kumkuşu and Kara sumru. Note: A permit is required (see info below).
From Bristol take A38 road south, turn left after ten miles and follow signposts. From Chew Valley lake it is a short journey westward along minor roads. A permit is required, obtainable from Bristol Water, see link below. Ask for combination to gatelocks.
