Description

The deep waters around Lake Vättern are ice-free most years. This makes it an excellent wintering area for birds. The lake holds large wintering populations of gulls like Küçük gümüþ martý, Kuzey Gümüş Martı and Büyük Karasırtlı Martı. This is also one of the best places for the rare Kutup martısı, although it is not seen most years. Most gulls winter around Motala. The area also holds wintering waterfowl. Most commonly: Büyük tarakdiş, Kuğu, Gri balýkçýl, Ötücü kuğu, Tepeli patka and Altıngöz. Around Vadstenaviken large amounts (many hundreds) of Yeşilbaş winter. Often with other rarer (wintering) dabbling ducks in the mix. The lake also holds wintering populations of Karabatak, Tarakdiş, Sütlabi (visitors from Boren) Bahri, Küçük batağan, and during mild winters: Kulaklı batağan, Kadife ördek, Karagerdanlý dalgýç and Telkuyruk. The large fields around Vadstena and Norrsten hold wintering geese, Sarıgagalı ketenkuşu and Alaca kirazkuşu. Many birds of prey also winter. Most common are Atmaca, and Akkuyruklu kartal.

During the last weeks of Febuari the first spring birds arrive. Sığırcık, Tarlakuşu, İspinoz, and Kızkuşu are usually the first to arrive. Some of the previously mentioned birds might start to winter if the winters continue to be mild. Many geese like Akyanaklý kaz, Boz kaz, Tarla kazi, Sakarca Tundra kazi and Kanada Kazı are often seen. Most geese congregate around Tycklingen and Norrsten. Sometimes Küçük Tarla Kazı is also found.

During March most of the geese increase in number. More birds of prey arrive: Paçalı şahin, Kerkenez, Gök doðan, and Kızıl Çaylak. In Vadstenaviken large amounts of dabbling ducks often rest. Suna (Regular), Karabağ martı, Poyrazkuşu, and Su çulluğu also arrive during this period. From this period onwards Büyük ak balýkçýl is sometimes seen.

During April other wader along with Ketenkuşu and Çayır incirkuşu arrive. During April-May large amounts of passerine birds, wader, gulls, and terns use the lake as a landmark for migration. It starts in the middle of April with thousands of İspinoz and Dağ ispinozu, continuing with thousands of Kervançulluğu, with smaller amounts of other waders like Sürmeli kervançulluğu, Kıyı çamurçulluğu, Döşüşkenkuş and Kızılbacak. Also large amounts of gulls like Karabağ martı and Küçük gümüþ martý. In early May hundreds of terns (Sumru, Kutup sumrusu) pass. Along with rarer birds like Kara sumru, Karaayaklı martı (quite rare) and Küçük martı.

During the summer many species of night-active birds can be heard like Çekirge Kamışçını, Benekli bülbül, Bıldırcın kılavuzu, Büyük kamışçın (vadstena reningsverk), Bıldırcın and sometimes Ağaç Kamışçını. Many other warblers can be found during this period. In the cities of Motala and Vadstena city birds like Kumru, Florya, Kara kızılkuyruk (missing most winters), Dağ ispinozu, Kaya güvercini, and Karabağlı ötleğen can be found year round.
