Description
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like Gümüş martı, Karasırtlı Martı and Karabağ martı. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like Sürmeli kervançulluğu, Tasçeviren, Ak kumkuşu and Dere düdükçünü.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly Sumru and Pembe Sumru, but sometimes also Karagagalı Sumru.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Atlantik boz yelkovani can be observed. Small numbers of Uzun-kuyruklu Fırtınakuşu can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like Atlantik Yelkovanı and Küçük Yelkovan.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like Halkalı Martı, Grönland Martısı and, in 2011, a Sarı Tepeli Gece Balıçılı.
