It's a recreational area but protected by Natura 2000. It is located in the south west Kraków right next to the Jagiellonian University Campus.
Pychowice i Okolice is a gorgeous area, covering about 20 hectares. With big open meadows, plenty of woodland, reedbeds, a stream, etc. The best time to explore the area is early morning (6-10am in spring/summer) but also worth heading out late afternoon for the potential sight of Gece Balikçili flying over on their way to the roosting site. Or you can go there early night for the owls ( Alaca Baykuş and always potential to find other species, especially worth checking for Kulaklı orman baykuşu).
Górka Pychowicka and the surroundings is the only spot in Kraków with such a diversity. You can also find the iconic Sarıasma, Çizgili ötleğen, Bıldırcın kılavuzu, Bülbül, Çütre, Mavigerdan (if your lucky!), various warblers, finches, buntings, flycatchers, thrushes, shrikes, swifts, woodpeckers, swallows, corvids and Guguk, Kerkenez, Şahin, Atmaca, Delice doğan, Bıldırcın. Plus species on migration, including Saz delicesi. Just a stunning place, which you can't miss if you're in the area.
You can get there by the public transport (bus, tram) following ul. Stefana Grota-Roweckiego and Michała Bobrzyńskiego (11, 17, 18, 52, 62 for tram), (578, 662 for bus) or from ul. Tyniecka (112, 162, 176, 612 for bus). You can get there by car of course and there is parking space available by ul. Gronostajowa if arriving via the same two former streets above or at P+R Czerwone Maki if you're following the trunk road 44.
The best way to explore the area is on foot if you want to appreciate the birds and the surroundings at a slow pace. Cycling will also work but not in all of the spots.
Waterproof but most importantly comfortable boots recommended if visiting in the early spring (especially after rainfall) and a mosquito repellent.
