Description

When you go on a two to three hour walk from the beach, through the village of Salt Creek, you will be able to spot birds in three different habitats. On the beachfront you can see Brown Pelican, Willet, Great-tailed Grackle and the fabulous Montezuma Oropendola.

Once you head into the interior through the mangroves you will hopefully be able to spot Common Black Hawk, Boat-billed Heron, Yellow-crowned Night Heron and Green Kingfisher.

And once you immerse yourself in the jungle, you might be able to view Lesser Kiskadee, Bananaquit, Groove-billed Ani and the lovely Red-lored Parrot.

Please note that to get the most of the your adventure, it is probably best to take on a local guide from the village because they have a deep knowledge of the local floral and fauna. And they can also show you some other special creatures like the poisonous red frog, night monkey and sloth.

Access

Salt Creek is a small village tucked away on the southeastern end of Isla Bastimentos, part of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago in Panama. You can only explore this area on foot as there are no cars or bycycles in this part of the island.

You will get to Salt Creek village by boat from Bocas Del Toro which is a great little trip through the archipelago and takes about an hour. And you can reach Bocas Del Toro from Panama City by car and boat, which takes about nine and half hours. Or by plane which takes about an hour.

Also be aware that it rains heavily here in December.
