Description

Hooker Valley features dramatic alpine terrain with rocky landscapes, scattered shrublands, and sparse native trees near the trailhead. The track climbs up through spectacular country, crossing three suspension bridges to reach glacial Hooker Lake.

Key species include the Kea, which sometimes hang around the camp ground or fly over the valley. Very occasionally also New Zealand Rock Wren are seen, though don't count on it. A delight are the Rifleman, Tomtit, and New Zealand Fantail along the track. There are usually Paradise Shelduck around as well as some gulls and terns.

Access

Located in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park, approximately 105 km from Lake Tekapo and 70 km from Twizel via State Highway 80. The well-signposted Hooker Valley Track begins from the White Horse Hill car park at the end of Hooker Valley Road, about 2 km past the Hermitage village. In winter, parts of the track or the whole track might be closed.

Parking is available at the White Horse Hill camping ground, with free parking available (but fills up quickly during peak season due to the track's popularity). No public transport serves this location - private vehicle access only.

Allow 2-3 hours for the full return walk to Hooker Lake (10 km return), though birding opportunities begin immediately from the car park. Early morning visits are recommended to avoid the crowd.
