Description

In the treeless landscape of the Puszta with its arid climate this little woodland between Hortobágy village and Debrecen stands out. It is a great place to spot Ala doğan. The falcons are attracted to the Ekin kargası colony that builds its nests in the wood. Ala doğan do not make a nest themselves. So when the Ala doğan arrive at the end of April there is a fight for the nests.

A visit can be easily combined with the Hortobáhy halastó (fish ponds) (also described on Birdingplaces) that are located on the same road.

Access

The woodland is located halfway between Hortobágy village and Debrecen on road 33, at km marker 75. When driving from west to east the place is located on the left. The 33 is the main road through the puszta. A dangerously busy road and you can't easily stop along the road. But luckily the area has a small parking (find "Szálkahalmi tanösvény Parkoló" on the map) . Press P on the map for directions to the parking and observation platform. The colony is located 100 meters from the P. Walking along the edge of the forest, you can reach a second observation tower.
