Behind Mandra Beach there are several temporary wetlands. A place for Boğmaklı toygar and Bataklıkkırlangıcı.
West of Porto Lagos lies several kilometers long Mandra Beach, consisting of one beach bar, one camp, one tavern, a line of summer cottages, and several temporary wetlands in the hinterland, usually flooded in winter and spring. In late June, I found only smaller lakes and a few ponds remaining.
There were quite a few Bataklıkkırlangıcı (common and widespread in the area), Yaz atmacasý, Karabaşlı kirazkuşu, Kızıl Başlı Örümcekkuşu, Poyrazkuşu, Tepeli toygar, Boğmaklı toygar, Kamış Bülbülü. Soaring birds included Leylek, Ak pelikan, Tepeli pelikan, and Yılan Kartalı.
Mandra Beach lies west of Porto Lagos, some 220 km east of Thessaloniki, within the largest national park of Greece, Nestos Delta and the Vistonida-Ismarida lakes and lagoons complex, founded in 2008. Click on a P in the map for directions.
A detailed description of the wider area is to be found in the Birdwatching in Northern Greece (2023) by Steve Mills.
