The Vehnemoor is protected area, partly still used for peat extraction. Since 1991 certain parts have been renaturalised offerering typical habitat succession.
In the large open area of the Vehnemoor typical marsh breeders such as Çayır incirkuşu, Mavigerdan, Bataklık kirazkuşu, Turna, Su çulluğu, Kervançulluğu, Kızılbacak and Küçük halkalı cılıbıt are common in spring and summer. There is also a small colony of Karabağ martı and single pairs Küçük gümüþ martý. The forested area in the central part is a breeding place for Çobanaldatan, Söğütbülbülü and Ağaç incirkuşu.
On spring migration parts that just have been recently renaturalised are also good spots for Waders. Most numerous species are Yeşilbacak, Yeşil düdükçün, Orman düdükçünü, Halkalı cılıbıt and Sarıbacaklı kumkuşu. From late April to August (best time is first decade of May) other Wader species such as Karakarınlı kumkuşu, Ak kumkuşu, Tasçeviren, Kızıl kumkuşu and Küçük kumkuşu could be watched here.
In winter the area is used as a roosting site for huge numbers of Greater White-Fronted Geese & Bean Geese, Common Cranes and swans.
See an incomplete list of species that have been observed in the Vehnemoor below.
There are four ways to access the moor (see map). One road through the area could be used by car, others are forbidden to use and blocked with barriers. But those can be explored on foot.
