Neuwerk is an island of about 3 km2. For bird watchers, Neuwerk is a paradise where thousands of birds can be seen.
Neuwerk is a natural dune island located about 10 km north of Cuxhaven. Neuwerk is divided into three large areas, the inhabited inner area, the northern foreland grazed with horses and cattle, and the Ostvorland with a naturally developing salt meadow. This is the key bird watching area of the island. The manageable island of Neuwerk has a population of just under 30. In summer, life for the islanders changes here, as up to 120,000 guests stay on the island during the season.
Every year more than 150 different bird species are seen on the island. In spring, thousands of geese use the green areas of the island to feed on the way to their Siberian breeding areas. Particularly worth experiencing are also the Karagagalı Sumru breeding in the Ostvorland. With about 450 breeding pairs, this rare species has been breeding on Neuwerk since 2006.
From Cuxhaven the passenger ship "MS Flipper" sails daily from April to October. See the link below.
