Description

Lake Itzelberg was artificially created by the Cistercian monks from the former Königsbronn monastery who dammed the Brenz river. For centuries, the water was important for fish farming. At the inlet of the river Brenz in Lake Itzelberg a bird sanctuary island has been created. This wetland biotope attracts many birds. Birds you can observe include Tarla ardıcı, Dağ kuyruksallayanı, Yalıçapkını, Küçük batağan, Su kılavuzu, Sakarmeke and Gri balýkçýl. In the winter months, many waterfowl, especially Elmabaş patka, Tepeli patka and sometimes Büyük tarakdiş, rest on the lake and then travel on to their breeding grounds in spring. The lake is a popular local recreation area in summer, so this is not the best time for birding. A circular hiking trail of 1,5 km leads around the lake.
