Description
The Eschefelder Teiche are a nature reserve located 30 km south of Leipzig. The area consists of 8 ponds and covers an area of 270 hectares. The ponds were artificially created in the 18th century for fishing. The largest pond is the pond near Eschefeld. The ponds are an important feeding, breeding and resting area for numerous waterfowl species. The surrounding area is mainly used for agriculture. On the edge of the large pond there is the Naturschutzstation (nature conservation station) Teichhaus. It is run by NABU (BirdLife Germany) and also has a restaurant. On the banks of the large pond on the artificially created dam you can find a bird hide.
The area has a Karabağ martı colony on the largest of the 8 lakes. In the noisy colony Karaboyunlu batağan Karaboyunlu bataðan and Akdeniz Martısı also find shelter. The most important breeding birds include Balaban and Küçük balaban, Saz delicesi, Büyük kamışçın, Çulhakuşu, Bıyıklı baştankara, Bülbül and Mavigerdan. All these species are best observed between April and early June. Depending on the season ducks like Çıkrıkçın, Macar ördeği, Altıngöz, Büyük tarakdiş, Kaşıkgaga, Suna and Kilkuyruk can be seen.
During migration periods, other species arrive. Balık kartalı and Akkuyruklu kartal are regular guests who prey on food in the waters. There are also Kara sumru as well as Küçük martı. Another interesting group during migration is resting waders. These include Kızkuşu, Küçük halkalı cılıbıt, Halkalı cılıbıt, Su çulluğu, Yeşilbacak, Dere düdükçünü, Orman düdükçünü, Kızılbacak and Döşüşkenkuş. Sometimes rare birds like Çizgili Kumkuşu, Bataklık düdükçünü and Deniz düdükçünü are observed.

Access
The ponds are located between the villages of Frohburg and Eschefeld, about 30 km south of Leipzig. From Frohburg train station, take bus line 254 in the direction of Altenburg. Or on foot in 25 minutes from Frohburg in the direction of Eschefeld. You can also park at the Naturschutzstation Teichhaus Eschefeld (Teichhaus 1, 04654 Frohburg). Click on the P in the map for directions. The circular walk indicated on the map is about 6 km.
