Former gravel pit that has been turned into a nature reserve. It is a nice place to observe water birds close to the city of Karlsruhe.
The lake Erlachsee is completely fenced to protect the birds. But an observation cabin at the southern shore offers good opportunities for bird spotting without causing disturbance. In addition, on the western shore the surrounding footpath also at one point allows a view on the lake.
Several gravel islands were created especially as breeding places for the Küçük halkalı cılıbıt, however, they don't seem to have nested there, at least not in recent years. In contrast, Bahri, Karabatak, Gri balýkçýl, Gümüş martı, Tepeli patka, Mandarin Ördeği, Boz kaz, Kanada Kazı and Sakarmeke can be seen regularly. With a bit of luck, you will also spot Yalıçapkını, Kaşıkgaga, Dere düdükçünü, Büyük ak balýkçýl, Küçük batağan and others.
The surrounding Oberwald forest offers further opportunities for observations of for example Kara ağaçkakan, Orman alaca ağaçkakanı, Ortanca Ağaçkakan, Yeşil Ağaçkakan and Uzunkuyruklu baştankara.
Erlachsee Oberwald is located only 3 km south of the city of Karlsruhe. The lake is easily accessible on foot or by bike on well-maintained paths. The circular route around the lake is about 1,7 km.
