With over 16,000 acres, Yolo Bypass is one of the best places to a see a wide variety of birds in California.
This wetlands area is a great place for birding. Whether you're driving along the roads or walking on the trails, you'll see a wide variety of shorebirds, waders, ducks, sparrows, raptors, and more.
Birds you can expect to encounter include: Yellow-headed Blackbird, Long-billed Curlew, Great Egret Savannah Sparrow, Swainson's Hawk, Northern Pintail, Snow Goose, White-faced Ibis, Great Blue Heron, Northern Harrier, Marsh Wren, and more.
This area also offers the chance to see unique, less common, range-restricted or iconic birds such as Sandhill Crane, White-faced Ibis, Tricolored Blackbird, Horned Lark, Yellow-billed Magpie, Loggerhead Shrike, Bank Swallow, Bald Eagle, Lesser Yellowlegs, Ross's Goose and Cackling Goose.
Entrance is free. You can bird from your car. There are a few miles of roads that go around the area. Or you can park and walk the trails. Some of the roads are closed during hunting times. And sometimes the whole area is closed if there's flooding, so check the main website before you go.
From eastbound I-80: Take the East Chiles Road exit and travel east one-quarter mile to the west levee access.
From westbound I-80: Take the "County Road 32A East Chiles Road" exit immediately west of the west end of the Yolo Causeway, turn right at stop sign and head south under freeway to west levee access.
