Popular state park with pine forests and a spring-fed pool.
Wekiwa Springs State Park is one of the best sites for Red-headed Woodpecker. It is also home to many longleaf pine specialties like Brown-headed Nuthatch and Bachman's Sparrow. Prevatt Lake near the Youth Camp can sometimes have waterfowl in the winter. In the evening, this place has Common Nighthawk and Chuck-will's-widow in the spring and summer. In winter evenings, the area by Sand Lake has American Woodcock.
Wekiwa Springs State Park is located about 30 minutes north of Orlando. To get there from Orlando take I-4 West from downtown Orlando. Exit at FL-436 W/Semoran Blvd (Exit 92). Continue on FL-436 W and then take FL-434 W to Wekiwa Springs Road. Follow the signs to the park entrance. Press a P on the map for directions to a parking lot.
The park opens at 8:00 AM. Be sure to arrive early as the park is very popular due to its spring-fed pools, and often closes when the park becomes full later in the day. The entrance fee for vehicles is $ 8.
The best areas are the Volksmarch Trail and the Sand Lake Trail. However, there are many other areas and trails to the park that leave a lot to explore.
