Long stretch of beach overlooking the Atlantic ocean and located on the Atlantic Flyway.
This beach at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to observe seabirds, shorebirds and migrating waterfowl. It is best to carry a spotting scope to watch seabirds from the shore. A walk on the beach rewards you with several species of shorebirds, especially in spring, summer and fall. The dune habitat hosts several species of sparrows ( Savannah, Field, Song, Clay-colored, Lark), Blue Buntings and sometimes Snow Buntings in the winter, Blue Grosbeak.
Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge is located in the southeastern corner of the City of Virginia Beach. Parking is located near the Visitor Center. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. From the parking it is a short walk to the beach. The beach stretches for several miles to the south where you can enter in North Carolina. The North side of the beach is closed to the public for 1 mile to offer a resting place for birds. The best way to explore the beach is by foot but bicycles are allowed. It is best to explore at low tide when the sand is packed (see a link to the tides table below). The circular trail indicated on the map is about 2 km.
