Higher Tamar Lake has the Devon/Cornwall border running through it, Lower Tamar Lake is solely in Devon.
In the past these two lakes were not watched as much as they are today, which is a shame as they are real gems, in the past numerous Nearctic duck and wader species and European wild swans have been seen, both lakes are within easy reach of one another by footpath. The Upper more modern Lake has a car park/toilets/bird hide and seasonal cafe, the water is used for fishing and boating and is more open with surrounding farmland. The older Lower Lake is mostly surrounded by trees and shrubs and is the best place to see both entita and talltita in the South West. It also has a bird hide and bird feeding station. Out of the two Lakes the Lower is the most quiet.
The A39 is due West, turn onto the B3254 near Kilkhampton, within a short time look for signs to Tamar Lakes, after Thurndon the road bisects both Lakes, take a left turn to the Upper Lake and car park.
Both Lakes have shallow edges, which makes Autumn migration a good potential, especially following a prolonged hot summer that leaves muddy margins. BE AWARE, boating takes place on the Upper Lake and fishing takes place on Upper and Lower Lakes.
