The first wild Fiskgjuse to breed in the Lake District for 150 years can be seen on Bassenthwaite Lake.
Bassenthwaite Lake in the lake District is providing a home for a wide variety of wildlife and especially for Fiskgjuse. Between April and August the Fiskgjuse put on their aerial display between Whinlatter and Bassenthwaite. They first nested beside Bassenthwaite in 2001 - the first wild Fiskgjuse to breed in the Lake District for 150 years. You can see them from the outdoor viewpoints at Dodd Wood where telescopes and binoculars are provided. There are two viewpoints in Dodd Wood, an upper and a lower. From the lower you can sometimes see the Fiskgjuse fishing in the Lake. The upper viewpoint is about a 30 minute walk up a forest track. Over the course of most days during the breeding season the Fiskgjuse can be seen fishing, sitting, feeding and flying. Of course also many other birds can be seen on the lake and in the forest.
You can visit the viewpoint in Dodd Wood on the east side of the lake or stop along the road on the west side of the lake (see the map). Dodd Wood is located about 3 miles North of Keswick off the A591. Car Park facilities include toilets and a tearoom. Click on a P in the map to get directions to the parking of your choice.
