The Gediz Delta is one of the largest areas of coastal wetlands in Turkey. The delta is home to more than 250 bird species.

Beskrivning

The Gediz Delta is the river delta at the confluence of the Gediz River with the Gulf of İzmir. It is a 14,900 hectares extensive coastal wetland with bays, salt and freshwater marshes, large saltpans, and four highly saline lagoons located at the mouth of the Gediz River. The site supports dry grasslands, arable land, and some woodlands. The globally threatened krushuvad pelikan breeds at the site. An important area for breeding, feeding, wintering, and sheltering internationally important numbers of numerous species of waterbirds. The delta hosts approximately 80,000 birds in winter and provides shelter for 10% of the world's större flamingo population. It is a Ramsar site since 1998 and an Important Bird Area since 2000.

Tillgänglighet

The delta is located 26 km from İzmir city center. Facilities in the site are a visitor center which has a small coffee bar and toilet, bird watching towers in different important parts of the site, and walking paths. The site opening time starts at 8:00 am.
