This relatively small national park that borders the south coast is the most important wetland area in Sri Lanka.
Bundala National Park is known for its great diversity of bird species that have settled in the many lagoons in this park. The park covers approximately 6,000 hectares and has a landscape of marshes, lagoons, salt pans and forest. Freshwater ponds and small forests and wastelands alternate. From the dikes you have a beautiful view of the many water birds present. You can only visit the area by jeep. Bundala harbors more than 200 species of birds. Large flocks of over 1,000 Greater Flamingo can sometimes be observed. Terns, ducks, cormorants, herons, ibises, storks, spoonbills and waders are abundant. There is also a small population of elephants in the park, which are easy to spot through the open landscape.
The national park is situated 245 kilometres southeast of Colombo and 15 km east (half an hour's drive) from the center of the city of Hambantota. Bundala can only be explored by car. Good option is to book an organized safari. Bundala has much lower visitor numbers than Yala or Udawalawe.
