Lake Sanabria is one of the very few sizable natural lakes in Spain. With a surface of 368 hectares it is also the largest glacial lake on the Iberian Peninsula. The Sanabria lake is part of the much wider nature reserve Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria. More than 140 bird species have been seen in the area. The abundant forests surrounding the Lago de Sanabria are formed by Pyrenean oaks. On the lake, in the surrounding forests or along the Cañón del Tera you can see many different and interesting birds like kungsörn, Bivråk, ormörn, grågam, gåsgam, turturduva, Rostgumpsvala, bergsångare, provencesångare and stentrast. And there is other fauna to be seen: roe deer, wolf, otter and trout. A sizeable population of wild wolves is living in the Sierra de la Culebra mountain range.

There are different ways to visit the area. You can first visit the visitor center of the Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria, that is located 8 km southeast of the lake. You can drive to the lake and make different stops to explore the area. Or you can walk the spectacular Cañón del Tera. On the map you see the route for a circular walk of 15 km. But you can also choose to only walk a part of the Cañón del Tera and then turn back. The starting point for a walk through the Cañón del Tera is very near the riverbank of the Lago de Sanabria, in Ribadelago Viejo. On leaving Ribadelago Viejo, and always parallel to the river's course, is the gorge. After leaving the path to San Martín de Castañeda to the right and crossing the Tera through an improvised walkway, the trail continues through an area full of large stones, brought there by the water current.

Espagnol: Muy cerca de la orilla del Lago de Sanabria, en Ribadelago Viejo, se inicia el recorrido que se interna a través del estrecho y espectacular Cañón del Tera. A la salida del citado pueblo y, siempre paralelo al río, se encuentra la cerrada garganta. Después de dejar a la derecha el camino de San Martín de Castañeda y vadear el Tera por un improvisado paso, el sendero discurre por una zona de grandes piedras acarreadas por la corriente. Al llegar a las primeras cascadas es necesario cruzar de nuevo el río y comenzar a ganar altura para salvar las primeras dificultades topográficas. Las huellas dejadas por las distintas glaciaciones cuaternarias en las rocas cámbricas de la zona caracterizan el relieve. Profundos barrancos, circos glaciares, alturas aborregadas, ibones, morrenas y bloques erráticos son algunas de las muestras de la erosión producida por el hielo. En el privilegiado entorno del Parque Natural del Lago de Sanabria se pueden localizar hasta 40 lagunas de origen glaciar. Una vereda cada vez más desdibujada alcanza, tras descender por unas escaleras naturales, la llamada Poza de Las Ninfas. Cascadas y pequeñas lagunas se alternan formando un rosario de gran belleza.
