Around the Centro Urogallo in the Valley of Laciana lives a large population of tjäder. If you follow the indicated trails, you have a chance to see them.
The Valley of Laciana is located near the headwaters of the River Sil in the Cantabrian Cordillera, to the north of the Province of Leon, bordering with Asturias. The area has a wide range of altitudes, with the consequent wealth of landscape and valuable habitats: limestone Oak groves, rocky outcrops, mountain grasslands, scrubland, numerous rivers and riparian forests in a good state of conservation. Many animals still live here like Iberian wolf and it is the place in Europe that houses the most brown bears. But also the birdlife is rich. A very interesting area is the area around the Centro Urogallo where you can see all kinds of forest birds. The biggest attraction of the area is the large population of tjäder. First you can visit the grouse center and after that you can do some of the indicated trails where you have a good chance to see tjäder. But also other interesting forest birds like and smutsgam.
You can park at the Centro Urogallo (see the P on the map). You can get information in the visitor center. From the center you can explore the surrounding mountains on foot or bicycle.
