In February and March thousands of Trana gather here before they cross the Pyrenees. But also vultures and many other birds can be seen here.
The Pool of Albore, next to Sotonera Reservoir, is where thousands of Trana, spend some time at the end of winter, in February and March. An average of 5,000 and a maximum of 30,000 birds are observed daily. The Alboré pool is a strategic swamp area to rest and recharge before crossing the Pyrenees on their trek to Northern Europe. The village of Montmesa has an exhibition centre about birds that you can visit. La Alberca has become the main resting area for Trana in recent years.
The Alboré Reservoir, next to La Sotonera Dam which you reach from Montmesa, close to the town of Ortilla. There is a path or track going down to the Reservoir, which leaves the village and is sign-posted. Before you reach the Reservoir there is a bird observatory. In the village of Montmesa you can visit the Bird Interpretation Centre. This visitor center opens in the season of migration of Trana, between November and the end of March, weekends and holidays.
