Beskrivning

Marvão Castle stands at a height of 843 metres above sea level in the Serra de São Mamede. The crag on which it stands is a fairly rugged escarpment, forming a natural point of defence, to which access can only be gained from the east, the direction in which the village has spread inside the walls. From here it was possible to watch over the nearby frontier with Spain. In Marvão they say that you are at such a height that you can see the backs of the vultures and raptors flying by. You can see rare birds such as hökörn, the symbol of this protected area, as well as gåsgam and ormörn. But also tornseglare, blek tornseglare and alpseglare. With a little luck you can see blåtrast.

Tillgänglighet

Marvao is perched on top of the hill. Marvao Castle is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. There is a large car park near the gate entrance which is very practical. The best view for scanning the surroundings, is from the top of the town on the castle garden side, from the wall. Walking is the best option. Inside the walls there are several craft shops and a cafe. You can walk around the town on the castle walls. Outside posted opening hours, you can wander freely inside the walls.
