Beskrivning
The harbour of Funchal is a fairly large harbour and is mainly used for tourists and as a stopover for ships that want to cross the Atlantic Ocean. The area provides an ideal roosting habitat for many species of shorebird, like medelhavstrut, silltrut and skrattmås. The shoreline is used by many species of wader, like småspov, roskarl, sandlöpare and drillsnäppa.
The harbour waters are a feeding area for multiple species of tern, being mainly fisktärna and rosentärna, but sometimes also Kentsk tärna.
Just outside the harbour and onto the Atlantic Ocean, large flocks of Gulnäbbad lira can be observed. Small numbers of spetsstjärtad petrell can be seen too. Other species of shearwater can be seen during migration, like mindre lira and makaronesisk lira.
In the last decades, many species of rare migratory birds have been observed in this harbour, like ringnäbbad mås, Vitvingad trut and, in 2011, a gulkronad natthäger.
