Beskrivning
The Altiplano de Azoia is a windswept dry limestone plateau with wildflowers including gum cistus, green heather, yellow centaury and allseed. Butterflies; swallowtail, Spanish swallowtail. Reptiles; skinks, lizards and whiptail snakes. Mammals; beech marten, Schreiber's bat, horsehoe bats and genet.
Due north from the lighthouse (star mark on the map) there is a display of fossilised dinosaur footprints.
Breeding birds include tofslärka, shrikes, vaktel, kornsparv, trädlärka, sammetshätta, provencesångare and häcksparv. From the western headland at Cabo Espichel, havssula, Gulnäbbad lira, Scopolilira and balearisk lira pass by, and Pilgrimsfalk, blek tornseglare, blåtrast and svart rödstjärt breed on the cliffs. Also alpseglare, hökörn and svartstare can be seen in the area.
The area is on a prime migration route. Expect eleonorafalk, ringtrast, fjällpipare and större piplärka.
