Beskrivning

Lago Sandoval sits deep in the Peruvian Amazon, inside the Tambopata National Reserve. The lake itself forms a long, calm oxbow shape and sits in a quiet pocket of rainforest where the water, the palm swamps, and the surrounding forest all attract different species. A huge amount of bird species can be observed around the lake, including Hoatzin, Anhinga, Sungrebe, Black Skimmer, Green Ibis, Rufescent Tiger-Heron, Agami Heron, Capped Heron, Blue-crowned Trogon, Gilded Barbet, Ivory-billed Aracari, White-throated Toucan, Red-bellied Macaw, Blue-headed Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Red-and-green Macaw, Scarlet Macaw, 12 species of woodpecker and 5 species of kingfisher. Also giant otters are often observed.

Lago Sandoval lies 15 km southeast of the city of Puerto Maldonado, the capital of the Madre de Dios department. From Puerto Maldonado, you travel by boat along the Madre de Dios river. You cross a section of the jungle, be well-prepared for hiking, until you reach a dock. From there you can explore the lake by boat and observe the shores, the water's surface, and the tree canopies, spotting all kinds of wildlife. The are also several jungle lodges in the area where you can stay.
