This 9 km loop track through the Wairau Lagoon brings you past an old ship wreck and lots of waders and waterfowl.
The flat track starts at the Blenheim water treatment plant and takes you through the saltmarshes of the Wairau Lagoon. Along the many channels running through the area, you can find White-faced Heron and the less common Kotuku (Great Egret), with some luck even Glossy Ibis. On the larger bodies of water and the mudflats, you can find the typical waterfowl such as Black Swan and Australian Shoveler, but also many waders such as Bar-tailed Godwit, Pied Stilt, and oystercatchers. Also keep your eyes open for Cirl Bunting.
You can also combine this trail with the Kotuku trail, which follows the Opaoa River, at the mouth of the Wairau River into a larger loop.
The start of the track is from the carpark at the Blenheim water treatment plant, which is about an 8 minute drive from the centre of Blenheim and just off SH 1 following Hardings Road till the end. Click on the P in the map for directions or coordinates. The track itselfs takes about 2 hours (without birding time) and while there are several bridges and boardwalks, there can be wet parts along the track.
