Great spot for the NZ endemic Whio (Blue Duck) along the banks of the Tongariro River on a short walk or 15 km loop along farmland and through native bush.
The flat track follows both sides of the Tongariro River with multiple entry points. Choose between the 15 km loop and several short walks, for example to the Tongariro River Lookout at the northern end of the loop, which offers a view of the river against the backdrop of the Tongariro National Park mountains. The track passes through native bush and urban areas, and partially runs alongside farmland. Along the way, you'll find various small fisherie tracks leading down to the river. A birding highlight is the resident Whio (Blue Duck), a rare endemic species found in fast-flowing mountain rivers. Other common sightings include shags, Welcome Swallow, New Zealand Bellbird, and New Zealand Fantail.
There are multiple parking spots available along the Tongariro River Trail, including Waipapa Reserve, Taupahi Reserve Park (with public toilets), Major Jones Bridge, Tongariro National Trout Centre (with public toilets), and Red Hut Bridge (with public toilets). Click on a P in the map to get directions or coordinates. The trail is also just a short walk from the Tūrangi i-Site. It can be explored on foot, by bike, and to some extent, it is wheelchair accessible. The only climb on the trail is at the Northern end to the viewpoint.
