One of the better spots for local coastal birding. The small offshore rocky island often attracts waders, while the site is also good for general seawatching.
At first glance the Tas-Safra area looks like any other stretch of low rocky shore. However over the years the site has proven more productive than one would think. in particular, the small rocky island a few metres offshore often attracts birds which are rarely seen elsewhere in Malta, especially certain waders such as strandskata in late summer and early autumn. The site is also good for general seawatching, especially from late summer to autumn. This includes watching migrating landbirds coming in off the sea. Highlights could include migrating flocks of större flamingo and large flocks of svarttärna. Juvenile rödnäbbad trut are common in August and September. The site attracts large numbers of gulls in winter.
The site is easily accessible by any means of transport, being found adjacent to a major arterial road. Plenty of parking is available. There is not much scope to explore so it is best to just sit and wait for birds flying past or scan the offshore island using a scope.
