Riserva Naturale Macchiatonda is a site of national relevance for wintering ljungpipare. It's a very good site to watch birds during spring and autumn migration (waders, ducks, herons). It's a nesting site of kalanderlärka and other larks. It's the best place in northern Latium to see rödnäbbad trut and other seabirds. It's quite common to see raptors hunting here from Tolfa hills, e.g. röd glada, Brun glada and ormörn. Note that the area is not always accessible and only from September to May, see the details below.

Access to the area is possible just from September to May, on Thursday afternoon (2:30 pm) and on Saturday and Sunday morning (10:15 am) and afternoon (1:00 pm). The entrance is on the Aurelia road, km 49,900, through a yellow gate. Click on the P in the map for directions.
