Beskrivning
Grunnafjörður's fertile soil, together with other biological factors, makes the area an eminently suitable habitat for plants and animals. The fjord is the only Ramsar area in Iceland that borders the sea. The size of the area is approximately 1,470 hectares. The fjord is important for many species of birds. The area is internationally important for prutgås, kustsnäppa and sandlöpare. About 25% of the prutgås population stops in Grunnafjörður on their journeys from mainland Europe to the Arctic in both spring and autumn and about 1% of the kustsnäppa population. Many waterfowl, such as skärsnäppa, kärrsnäppa, större strandpipare and strandskata depend on the mudflats for their survival.
