Lake Almyros is one of the most important wetlands of western Crete. In the lake you can find many aquatic birds. The lake is not only worth a visit for waterfowl. In Georgioupoulis I found the largest ladusvala roost I have seen so far! Among the other birds you can encounter are gluttsnäppa, grönbena, enkelbeckasin, drillsnäppa, skogssnäppa, kungsfiskare, alpseglare, Silkeshäger, medelhavstrut, steglits, italiensk sparv and cettisångare.
